Revel Canyon City Half Marathon Race Review

Ellen and I ran the Inaugural Revel Canyon City Half Marathon on Saturday and WOW it was amazing! I was not so secretly (what’s the point of keeping a running goal secret? Who cares if you don’t make it?) hoping to break 1:30, but the thought of running a 6:50 average seemed impossible. I texted Gisele, my running friend/mentor/guru the night before saying “6:50. There is NO way.” Her response, “Go watchless.” I ALMOST took the advice. I wore my watch but rather than obsessing over it I started with the 1:30 pace group for the first 7ish miles and was flattered when the pacer looked at me and said, “You really need to be ahead of me right now.” So a new friend I met in the pack (we were all talking as a group the first 7 miles which calmed my nerves and made it feel more like a training run) said he would push the pace with me. He told me not to look at my watch and just run. We made our way down to Azusa (yes, this is a net downhill course..my next goal is to run this time on a flat or hilly course) and we kept talking most of the way (the last two miles hurt so I didn’t really talk) and when I turned the corner and saw the finisher clock at 1:27 I thought “Ohhhhh myyyy gooodnesss.” Never did I imagine I would EVER run a half this fast. My final time was 1:27:33, averaging a 6:41. I finished first in my age group and was awarded with a box of yummy powerbar chocolate wafer treats. All the other runners ahead of me were older, which makes me hope my best running years are ahead of me! Ellen also had an awesome race, finishing 2nd in our age group with 1:34:44. She’s getting SOOOO FAST! We’re going to ROCK the LA Charity Half! The race was so well organized, and it was fun to run so close to LA but to feel completely way from it all in the mountains. I am definitely running another Revel event in the future.

Thinking of running this race next year?

Pros:

  • Fast course
  • Point to point finish
  • Choose your size t-shirts
  • Headbands, pre-race blankets and gloves
  • Easy parking and shuttle to the start
  • BEAUTIFUL mountain course
  • Lots of pacers
  • Post race massages
  • FREE photos and race time cards
  • Easy transfers if you’re unable to run the race

Cons:

  • Course did not allow for many spectators
  • Quads and knees might hurt if you aren’t used to downhill courses
  • A few hills in there that surprised me!
  • I made friends and talked the whole run, but it had potential to be a lonely race
  • Bag check truck was late and was apparently stuck in the canyon. We waited about 20 minutes. It honestly didn’t bother me but some people seemed annoyed.
  • Might be an intimidating crowd if you are new to running. Mostly serious runners.

Here’s what I ran last week:

  • Monday: Three Mile Run with Back on My Feet
  • Tuesday: Four Mile Run with Brent and Two Miles at 6:48
  • Wednesday: Three Mile Run
  • Thursday: Three Mile Run
  • Friday: Off
  • Saturday: Canyon City Half Marathon
  • Sunday: I’ll probably only end up doing a lap at Lulu 🙂

Chicagoland Spring Half Marathon Race Review

Hi Restless Runners! I’m the Third Culture Foodie turned Restless Runner’s little sister! If you want to get to know me a little better click here, but for now, I want to give you a review of the Chicagoland Spring Half Marathon I ran this past weekend.

So, it might have been the shining sun, it might have been the scenic course, or it might have been the PR, but I had a great experience with this half. The race actually took place in Schaumburg, a northwest suburb of Chicago. At first I was a little turned off by this, I mean I wanted to race IN the CITY OF CHICAGO, not some random suburb! But by the time I arrived to the start, I quickly realized why it was held here, the course was BEAUTIFUL, and the 65 degree weather didn’t hurt either! The whole run you’re surrounded by tall trees, pretty ponds, and awesome spectators!

As for the actual run, per usual, I was loving life up until 9 miles. Then after that, I found myself checking my garmin obsessively! I was SO ready to be done with the run! Through the power of my legs and the power of the Pitbull songs I was cranking, I finished. And PR’ed! 1:36! Woohoo!!

Thinking about running this race?
Pros:
-Scenic Course/Lots of Shade (in case its a hot day)
-We got racing Hoodie’s rather than Tshirt’s! They also had XS!
-ITS CHEAP! The race cost me $55 dolla!
Cons:
-Not enough bathrooms. I actually started off the race slightly late due to this.
-Not enough water stations (the Full Marathon had a very similar course, I would not have been happy with the water supply if i was running the full but it wasn’t too bad for the half)

 

Orange County Half Marathon Race Review

This is my first race review as the Restless Runner! Last night Ellen and I drove to Newport Beach for the OC Half Marathon. The race started at 6:15 AM, so we decided to spend the night in Orange County with Melissa and Gisele. It was also a fun excuse to explore Newport! We both were avid Laguna Beach, The OC and The Hills viewers, so being Orange County always feels a little surreal. After checking into our hotel, Ellen and I drove down to Balboa Island for dinner.

We ate at The Village Inn. It was nothing spectacular, but we were looking for a relaxed pub feel. Because we had not specifically trained for this half and we were on a mini-vacation in Newport Beach, we decided to fuel up with french fries, beer and famous OC frozen bananas. Probably not the best pre-race meal, but it worked out for us 🙂

Although I had not specifically trained for this race, I was hoping to PR. I had run a 1:36 at Surf City in February, and was really hoping to run in the 1:35 range. That would mean a 7:15 pace. I didn’t want to be a slave to my watch, but I knew I was capable of holding a 7:15, as scary as it sounded. Ellen was hoping to break 1:45 and Melissa wanted to run her first sub 2 hour half marathon. Gisele was already off running the marathon that started at 5:30 AM.

I spent the first few miles analyzing how I was feeling, worried because my legs felt a little heavy. I was a little nervous that running a 1:35 was too ambitious. I had run a 1:36 in the peak of marathon training, and my mileage had not been as high since the marathon. I freaked myself out a little, but took Lululemon Run Club leader Kathy and Gisele’s advice and just ran what felt right. When I reached mile ten still smiling, I knew I could push a little harder, so I focused on passing one runner at a time. I was running hard but loving every minute of it. I crossed finish line in 1:33:17 having worked hard but not being completely depleted. Time is never as important to me as enjoying the experience, and I enjoyed the entire race experience.  Ellen crossed the finish line in an incredible 1:43, Melissa completely surpassed her goal with a 1:55 and Gisele finished the marathon in a 3:08, her third marathon in three weeks. It was a great day for all of us!

Being a Restless Runner, I drove back to LA, ate lunch, went grocery shopping with Brent and was off to pick up students for Girls on the Run practice. We ran two miles on the beach in Playa! My reward for running the half and leading practice was dinner at The Tripel, my favorite restaurant in LA.

Thinking of running the OC Half Marathon next year? Here are some things to consider…

PROs:

  • T-shirts fit well and are super cute!
  • Post-Race Massage Envy’s massage center was AMAZING
  • People say the course is boring, but personally I loved the Pacific Ocean views, yachts and expensive homes
  • Enough hills to make the course interesting, but nothing crazy
  • OC Half is a Beach Cities Challenge course. Ellen and I will be earning our medal at Long Beach in the fall!

CONs:

  • Traffic around town after the race due to road closures. Make a post-race plan!
  • Expo freebies were lacking
  • Didn’t feel like there was enough water available after the race
